What are aspheric lenses?

Lenses which employ a surface created by the revolution of a non-spherical curve which may be a conic section.

Why is the use of these surfaces beneficial?

The conicoidal surface is astigmatic and can be used to neutralise aberrational astigmatism allowing thinner, flatter best form lenses to be produced.
