NTD

National Theatre of the Deaf – Founded in 1967, NTD is a touring theatre group of deaf and hearing actors who entertain audiences worldwide through sign language, music and the spoken word. Goals include:
To make theatre accessible to the deaf
To promote awareness of Deaf culture

ADA

Americans with Disabilities Act - took effect in 1992
Prohibits employers, governments and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. (In regard to job application procedures, hiring, job training, advancements, etc.)
Requires employers, government, businesses, etc. to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. (Ex: Sign language interpreters, handicap accessible restrooms)
Employers are required to make an accommodation to the known disability if it does not impose an “undue hardship” on the operation of the employer’s business. Employers are not required to provide personal use items such as glasses or hearing aids.

BDA

Black Deaf Advocates – Established in 1982. The official voice of Black Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Americans. Advocates for equal access and works to remedy past injustices. Promotes educational, cultural, social and economic advancements of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing African Americans.

NTID

National Technical Institute for the Deaf – The world’s first and largest technological college for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Located in Rochester, New York.

NAD

National Association of the Deaf – Established in 1880, its mission is to promote, protect and preserve the rights and quality of life of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals in the United States.

RID

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf – Founded in 1964, the RID is dedicated to the professional development of interpreters and transliterators.
