1885-1907, first came from Hiroshima and Yamamoochi, influenced by geo-politics
Japanese weren't allowed to leave Japan to work, family migration that countered Chinese "bachelor society" as women were picture brides

Characteristics of Korean immigrants: plantation workers, Christians, Christian church became center to communities, many were farmers

Stopped Chinese from coming to America, mass exodus of Chinese workers ended, allowed merchants to continue their business between USA and china but kept out undesirable Chinese

Asiatic Barred Zone- Immigration Act of 1917

prohibits the entry of "aliens ineligible for citizenship"= ends Japanese immigration, adopt a National Quota System
Quota: based towards European country received large quota because USA preferred anglo looking--- made statement of their national identity
Tydings- Mcduffie Act
Upgrades the status of the Philippines to a "commonwealth" and promises: 1. Indepence in 1946 and in return Filipinos lose their status as "US Nationals" and 2. limits the immigration of Filipino "aliens" to a quota of 50 per year, alianced anti-imperialists and racists in America West
