It isn't a very large empire because of the climate. There is a very small section of the country that can sustain life due to the desserts so this led to small empires. The amount of illnesses also led to it being a small empire (tse tse fly, malaria).

Trade grew up in the deserts because of the use of camels. There was gold and salt that could be traded because it was rare and there was also ivory and hide and slaves. Western part didn't have many ports so trade is limited to Indian Ocean.

Criminals, captives of war, or people that owed debts were usually slaves.

They spread their language, knowledge, and agriculture, as well as their iron smelting techniques.

Christianity and Islam due to the spread of Arabs out across the continent because as the Arabs moved so did their religion. Main trade cities remain Muslim in today's world.
