What is a drainage basin?
The catchment area fro which a river system obtains its water. The watershed separates 2 drainage basins.
What is precipitation?
Water that falls from the atmosphere to the surface of the Earth (could be rain, sleet, snow, fog, mist etc.)
What is infiltration?

The passage of water into the soil. Takes place quickly at the start of a storm but slower as soil becomes more saturated.
What is stemflow?
The water that runs down the stems and branches of trees and other plants during and after rainfall. Takes place after interception.
What is throughfall?

The water that drips off leaves when there is too much water.

What is interception?
Where raindrops are prevented from directly reaching the soil surface. This happens as vegetation gets in the way.

What is infiltration capacity?
Maximum rate at which rainwater can be absorbed by a particular soil.
What is throughflow?
The water that moves downslope through the subsoil and is pulled by gravity.
What is percolation?
The downward movement of water within the rock under the soil surface.
What is groundwater flow?
The slowest transfer of water within the basin.
What is overland flow?

Water flowing over the land due to the water not being able to infiltrate the ground.
What is evaporation?

Where water is turned into water vapour (requires a lot of energy)
What is evapotranspiration?
The total amount of water removed by evaporation and transpiration from a vegetated land source.
