Fiberous joints

Fibrous joints are where adjacent bones are strongly united by fibrous connective tissue.

Held together with dense dyno vial connective tissue. No synovial cavity

Cartilaginous Joints

Joints made up completely of cartilage. (either hyaline or fibrocartilage)

Found between costal cartilage and sternum. Also found in epiphyseal plate

Synovial joints

Allow for movement. Hyaline cartilage covers the surface and synovial fluid lubricates it all within a synovial capsule

3 kinds of joints

Synthrosis: immovable. [Fiberous]

Amphiarthrosis: bend a little [Cartilaginius]

diarthrosis : freely moves [synovial]

Common traits of synovial joints

- fluid filled capsule surrounding articular (hyaline) cartilage

Knee Joint Deep Dive

Femur, tibula and tibia are layered with articular (hyaline) cartilage

Meniscus: act as shock absorbers between the bones. Stabilizes it as well (cup shaped)

Synovial fluid: within the synovial joint nourishes cells, removes waste, lubes articular surfaces.

Lateral/Fibular and Medial/Tibular Collateral Ligaments: Stop knee from twisting (these are on each side of the knee)

Anterior Cruciate Ligament: Prevents forward displacement

Posterior Cruciate Ligament: prevents backwards displacement

Synovial Joint Layers

Joint Cavity (s-fluid filled)

Synovial Layer/Capsule

Fiberous layer/Capsule

What makes an articular capsule

(1) the outer fibrous membrane that may contain ligaments and (2) the inner synovial membrane that secretes fluid

When a knee is hit from the left, what things tend to break together?

Medial Meniscus, Anterior cruciate ligaments and medial collateral ligaments

Define Bursa

Little coushin full of synovial fluid. Coushins bind structures and helps them move easily. Hamburger bun shaped

Tendon Sheet

Like bursa, synovial filled tube that encapsulates a tendon. Hot dog bun

Bursitus

When a bursa becomes inflammed. Becomes painful
