Henri de Tolouse-Lautrec, Le Divan Japonais, 1892-1893 Japonisme, Art Nouveau
Tolouse-Lautrec's art was influenced by the flatness of Japanese woodblock prints, and is filled with pleasing curves. This picture features the radical simplification and composition that was common in his posters. |

Victor Horta, Stairway, Tassel House, Brussels 1892-93
The sinuous forms of this stairway are a mix of iron, glass and mosaic, and resemble plant life, perhaps rubber trees. Whiplash curves, not much differentiation between spaces. The structure is not disguised, rather, integrated into the design. |

Gustave Moreau, Jupiter and Semele 1890-1895 Symbolism
This painting features an extreme level of detail everywhere except on the body of Semele, which is pure in the moments before she is subsumed into Jupiter, aside from the wound on her side where Jupiter has ripped out the fetal Bacchus to sew it into his thigh. All the detail of the painting forms an otherworldly realm. His work reads like a symphonic poem. He had a reputation for being odd. |

Odilon Redon, Vision, from In A Dream 1879
Perhaps homage to Goya, this lithograph features surreal, oversized architecture, somewhat Freudian-looking dream figures. The eye looks upwards, almost a symbol of divine inspiration. |
