basilica

in christian architecture, a church somewhat resembling the roman basilica, usually entered from one end with an apse at the other

apse

a recess, usually semi circular, in the wall of a building, commonly found in the east end of a church.

nave

the central area of a church, demarcated from the rest of it by columns

aisles

the portion of a basilica flanking the nave, and separated from it by a row of columns or piers

arcade

a series of arches supported by piers or columns

transept

the part of the church with an axis that crosses the nave at a right angle

ambulatory

a covered walkway outdoors or indoors especially around the passageways of the apes and the choirs

flying buttress

an inclined member carried on an arch or a series of arches and a solid buttress to which it transmits a lateral thrust (buttress: an exterior masonry structure that opposes the lateral thrust of a arch or vault.

clerestory

windows that form the naves uppermost levels below the timber ceilings or vaults

triforium

in a gothic church, the blind arcaded gallery below the clerestory, occasionally the arcades are filled with stained glass

cloister

a monastery courtyard usually with ambulatories on the sides

narthex

a porch or vestibule of a church, usually arcaded preceding to the nave

central plan

in a central plan the dimensions of the building are of equal or almost equal dimension around the center

a semicircular niche set into the qibla wall of a mosque

Minarets

a tower from which the faithful are called to worship; a distinctive architectural trait of a mosque

Maqsura

in some mosques a screened area in front of the mihrab reserved for a ruler

Icon

a portrait or image, a panel, of a sacred personages that is an object of veneration
