There is also a sense of naturalism in the clothing and contrapposto in their stances.

La Primavera by Botticelli. Depiction of pagan gods. Venus in the center, Cupid above, Chloris being abducted by Zephyrus and turned into Flora to the right. The three graces and Mars to the left. Naturalistic and idealized. Seems to be a wedding gift.

Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Nudity that was unusual. Renaissance erotica. Venus is in the "modest Venus pose". Venus stands in contrapposto on a shell. Idealized figure with naturalism. Zephyr blowing her to shore where Flora waits to wrap her in a cloth.

The Lamentation over the Dead by Mantegna. Shows Christ after being taken down from the cross. His body is foreshortened but the proportions are not quite right. This is considered a Trompe L'oeil or "trick of the eye". Mantegna was a master of illusionistic art.
Camera Picta by Mantegna. This painting is in a bridal chamber. All of the architecture is painted, but looks very real.

Compare and contrast the difference between Donatello's David and Michelangelo's David statues

Donatello's David is a bronze figure. It was created in the early renaissance. He looks rather young and somewhat feminine and stands nude in contrapposto. He is depicted after the fight, standing triumphantly. His eyes look out at the viewer.

Michelangelo's David is a marble figure. It was created during the high renaissance. He appears to be a man in his 20s and is rather masculine and also stands in contapposto. He looks like he is about to battle Goliath. His eyes look off into the distance.

Iconography of The Last Supper

The moment in which Christ informs the disciples that before daybreak one of the disciples will betray him, the shock and astonishment that the disciples felt was mirrored in their expressions. Da Vinci breaks from tradition and devises a formation that exposes the faces and expressions. This novelty, the concept and layout are totally new.
What are the key characteristics of Mannerist paintings?

-Elongated bodies

-Figura Serpintina

-Less emphasis on balance and symmetry

-Visible brush strokes

-Unusual lighting

Compare and contrast Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna on the Rocks and Raphael's Madonna del Prato.

Raphael's Madonna is softer, she is large in size, idealized, painting is lighter in color, barefoot (emphasized humanity), blended, realistic background, and the children are soft and plump looking.

Leonardo's Madonna is darker and has a crazy background. It feel less intimate, has sharp edges, and the children appear muscular.

Compare and contrast Masaccio's and Van Eyck's depictions of Adam and Eve.

They both depict Adam and Eve after being kicked out of Eden. Masaccio's Adam and Eve seems more raw and expressive. You can see their emotion clearly on their faces. They morn leaving the garden. They are more idealized. But in Eyck's you can see that Adam and Eve are pretty expressionless. The stare into the distance. Masaccio's is also quite lighter in comparison to Eyck's. There is also more play with shadow in Van Eyck's which gives the figures more depth. You can also tell that The proportions in Van Eyck's are more realistic.

Compare and contrast the portrait of Batista Sforza by Piero della Francesca and Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

They are both portraits of women. Piero's portrait is lighter and sharper looking. There is hardly chiaroscuro. She looks off into the distance, expressionless and it is only the profile of her face. Leonardo's portrait is darker and softer. Heavy use of chiaroscuro creates a realistic and natural feel. She is facing the viewer.

Compare and contrast Titian's and El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin.

-Titian's Assumption is warm and dark. It is more naturalistic and soft.

-El Greco's is cool and light. It is more expressive and sharp.

How did the church influence art during the Renaissance?

They rejected nudity and saw it as offensive, especially in religious paintings. They rejected manerist excess. They did not like the twisting bodies and lack of modestly. They often had artists redo paintings, add things into paints, or rename paintings to fit their ideals.

Compare Gothic and Renaissance architecture
Renaissance:

Arches were rounded at the top. Buildings were always symmetrical. In the renaissance architects used the three styles of columns they borrowed from the Greeks -Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.

Gothic:

The Gothic arches have a distinct peak at the top of the arch. The design of buildings was asymmetrical. Often the number of spires that were often used in Gothic building was different on one side of an entrance than on the other.

How did the artist's view of himself change from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance?

Artists in the middle ages basically only worked for the church and only had one job (painting, mosaics, sculpting). There was little emphasis on the artist themselves and the art was almost all religious.

Explain the shift in how nudity was viewed during the Renaissance.

It was more widely accepted during the renaissance. During the middle ages, nudity was never present and all figure were heavily clothed. But some of the nude paintings during the renaissance would have been viewed as erotic and thus not something you would have displayed out in the open.
