Felt entire groups of marginalized peoples needed a voice. Decided to catalog this world through his art.

Low in society. Break the stones to make way for rails to be built so higher class can travel on trains. Pointing out that while the aristocrats are in their trains, relaxing, they should remember the people that worked hard in uncomfortable hard conditions so they can be comfortable. |

First modern painter. Hes a realist painter, but hes considered the godfather of impressionism. Upperclass found him inappropriate. Worked outside the realm of good behavior and etiquette. |

She looks like an actual real human. a prostitute. Took of her clothes actively, which was scandelous.
People were okay with nudes, it was like they were either supposed to be, or it was voyouristic in nature. This had none of that, she directed your direct attention and disrobed.
The artist got kicked out of the salone for this one. |

Controversial because of how strictlynhe adhered to realism. To understand the body, you must study it inside and out. Visited clinics for this purpose. Also painted and studied nudes, real prostitutes, which freaked out the mothers of daughters in his class Gets kicked out too. Rejected from worlds fair in Philadelphia, told his work was more of a medical illustration. Felt art was to tell us something of value, not to make us feel good |

Jacob Riis |
American photographer. Came to new york and was horrified by the living conditions.
Way he photographed was by going to these tenants, opening the door and taking a snapshot while they were surprised.
Gave people a concrete glimpse into the world of these peoples, and how their buildings had no light, windies or escape if things go wrong.
Lead to tenant landlord laws.

Radical at the time for what they believed in. Wanted to record fleeting events. Were criticized for their unfinished quality. Dont paint the images, let the image come out of what your painting. Usage of plen air painting and impasto. Paint what you ACTUALLY see. |

Very impasto Distraught by world he lived in, wish he could escape it. Depressed. Took his own life. Painted starry sky at the last year of his life while in an asylum. Represented his despair |

Picasso Guernica |
Interested in the 4 dimensions. Cubism Fleed to Spain when Fascists take over. While hes away, the tiny town of Guernica is leveled by bombs.
When he hears this, he decides to paint this as an expression of the agony of war.
Uses pieces of newsprint as a reminder that this event really happened.
Refused to have this picture in Spain so long as Franco was there
