Realism
in the visual arts, the depiction of aspects or objects of the external world with a degree of perceptual accuracy.
Representationalism
Aspects or objects of the external world are recognizable.
However, they may be very realistic, OR very abstract.
Figuration (Figurative Art)
There are two meanings in common art historical
usage: as a synonym for REPRESENTATIONAL; and representation, in particular, of the
human figure.
Abstraction
Expansive, imprecise term essentially meaning distortion of form from the way we perceive it in the external world. Sometimes forms are abstract BUT ALSO representational. Sometimes (particularly in early and mid 20th –century writings about art) the term “abstract” is used to mean TOTALLY ABSTRACT OR NONOBJECTIVE (see below). We will make a more precise distinction. Beware the potential confusion.
Expressionism
Distortion or abstraction, the purpose of which is the communication or representation of emotion, or at least states of mind. Usually painterly in nature, exhibiting obvious traces of brushwork and process. May be representational OR nonobjective
Total Abstraction / Nonrepresentationalism / Nonobjectivism
Art that does NOT make ANY recognizable reference to aspects or objects in the external
world. However, “nonobjective” art may “represent” states of mind or states of being, as in
the “abstract expressionism” of Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings).
Symbolism
Works may include “primitive” or occult references (symbols), but color, line, and shape in their own right are used to stimulate the senses and the spirit.
