actual space
the real space we have to fill with our design. this space has defined dimensions.
aethetic
a personal response to what we consider beautiful, often based on cultural or educated experience
approx symmetry
a balance system in which our first impression is that of symmetry. wieight may be identical but not mirror image
asymm balance
(informal bal) a balance system in which the visual weight of the dissimilar shapoes on both sides of the implied axis is equal. frequnetly, the elements cross over the axis.
axis
a central line that bisects a two-dim form or composition creating balance
balance
positive and negative shapes distributed in space by apparent visual weight to create harmony
choas
confused or disorderly; lacking order
cohesive
to unify, harmoize or be consistent
complex design
complicated as opposed to simple. the use of many elements is harder to design and comprehend
composition
the way the parts or visual elements are arranged and organized
contrast
the result of comparing one thing to another and seeing the difference
crop
to cut off a portion of a shape
crysytallographic
(all over pattern) balance with equal emphasis over an entire 2d surface so there is always the same visual weight or attraction wherever you look
design
a visual, creative solution to a functional or decorative problem
directional line
a line or lines which direct our visual attention in a specific direction
division of space
breaking up space by use of positive and negative shapes
elements
the parts, or components, of a design such as line, shape, color, value, etc
emphasis
the main element or focal point; what the viewers eye should see first
focal point
a compositional devise emphasizing a certain area to draw attention ot the piece
format
the shape or direction of our working or actual space. May be horizontal, vertical, or varied
geomtetric shape
usually man made shapes that are precise, exact. triangles, squares, circles, etc
graphic design
visual communication design usually for commercial purposes
grid
a network of horizontal and vbertical interesecting lines that divide spaces and create a framework of areas
implied axis
a "mental", psychological division of space. usually centered or perceived bilaterally.
implied line
a perceived contiuation of images or symbols that imply a line
line
a mark longer than it is wide and seen because it differs in value, color or texture from its background
linear shape
an elongated shape that reminds us of a line
mass
having volume or depth; takes up 3d space
medium, media
the kind of materials one works with, such as pigments, film, fabric, paper
mirror image
when one half of a compositioni is an exact relfection of the other side
module
a specific measured area or standard unit
negative shape
the implied shape produced after two or more positive (black) shapes are placed in a negative space
negative space
completely empty actual or working space
nonrep
a type of art which is entirely imaginative and not derived from anything visually perceived or observed by the artist
naturalism
the approach to art which is based on a description of things visually experienced
organic shape
a natural shape usually found in nature
original
a primary, inventive form of producing an idea, method, performance, etc
pattern
the repitition of a motif in either a predictable or random placement
placement
location, situation or juxtaposition of elements
positive shape
a black shape or line placed in a negative or empty space
positive shape
a black shape or line placed ina negative or empty space
problem solving
a sequence of strategies for finding a solution to a problem
radial balance
a composition in which all visual elements are balanced around and radiate from a central point
random pattern
a pattern effect because it is a repeated shape or motif, but can be scattered or not controlled as in an all-over pattern. less formal
realism
a style of art that is based on the faithful reproduction the visual actuality
reptition
the result of repeating or doing the same thing over and over
representational
an image suggestive of the appearance of an actual object
shape
an image in space
simple design
few elements used in the space and composition. easy for the viewer to comprehend
space
an empty, negative area where a design can fit
symm balance
(formal balance) technically, a mirror image. elements on either side of the implied axis have precisely the same shape, but in reverse, and have the identical visual weight.
tension
opposing forces, push/pull, yinyang
unity
the effect of all the princicples being in harmony each another, creating the feeling of wholeness
working space
the space that reflects the actual space. the two could be the same space. this is the space we use to solve our design problem.
