Black Figure Painting Step 1

The pots were placed inside of the firing chamber of the kiln, temperature was raised to 800 degrees centigrade, and there was a free flow of air. (oxidation)


During this stage pot became red all over.

Black Figure Painting Step 2

Green wood was placed on the fire and air access was cut off. The temperature rose to 950 degrees then allowed to fall back to 900 degrees. (reduction) The pots became black all over.

Air was allowed into the chamber. The parts of the pots that were painted black remained black and the parts of the pot that were not painted turned red.
