What are the three types of exchange?
Reciprocity

Redistribution

Market Exchange
What is reciprocity?
The exchange between individuals who are social equals.
What is redistribution?
It operates through a central controlling organization.
What is market exchange?
It occurs at a central location, where bargaining is often involved.
How do we look for evidence of different types of exchange?
We look at the life history of trade goods.
What does the life history of goods involve?
Source, production, distribution, and consumption.
Describe trace element analysis.
It uses chemical composition of obsidian (it varies according to volcanic source) to source obsidian.
Why is obsidian chosen?
It was widely used, being extremely sharp though brittle.
How does trace element analysis uncover details of exchange networks?
It can source goods - the further from the quarry, the less obsidian is found. This demonstrates down-the-line trading.
What are great quantities far from a quarry indicative of?
Increased managerial control.
What is the Uluburun shipwreck?
A Bronze Age Phoenician ship.
What does the shipwreck teach us about trade networks?
It had hundreds of copper ox-hide ingots on board (Cypress), ebony and African hippo ivory, vessels of liquids and seeds (Crete), beads (Baltic) and bronze tools and weapons. These were all sourced to different locations, and a trade route could be constructed.
What is the difference between a simple economy and a complex economy?
A simple economy is self-sufficient. A complex economy has specialization, and people are dependent on one another.
