Out of Africa Theory
Proposes the modern humans evolved from a local population of archaic humans in Africa between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago. The group migrated from Africa and eventually replaced all other populations in the world. *All modern human variation evolved after this time; regional variation is a recent development; no mating between species. Yoel Rak

Multiregional Evolution Theory
Archaic human populations in regional areas slowly evolved into modern humans. Modern traits arose in some populations and spread to others through gene flow. Neandertals were a regional variation of h. sapiens; interbreeding was possible. Milford Wolpoff
Microevolution
Small genetic changes that occur over a few generations. Makes the alleles in a population more or less common over time.
Macroevolution
The broader pattern of change over thousands of generations through which new species form.
The Neandertal Question
Were Neandertals a seperate species, or able to mate with early modern humans?
Fred Smith
Paleoanthropologist that believes anatomical details suggest a contribution of Neandertals to early modern humans.
Anne Stone
Geneticist that believes that Neandertals were not a direct ancestor to humans, but more like a cousin to the modern human species.
Homo neanderthalensis
A stocky, cold adapted hominin that evolved in Europe by 150,000 years ago. Went extinct about 30,000 years ago.
Homo sapiens
A warm adapted, tall hominin that evolved in Africa by 160,000 years ago.
African Technologies vs. Neandertal Technologies
African technologies have some more advanced characteristics; the widespread use of composite tools. African tools also tend to be more standardized and elaborate.
Shanidar Cave, Iraq
Site that is one of the most famous examples of intentional burial by Neandertals. *They did not include any type of grave goods, or bury their dead in a way that indicates a belief in supernatural forces or an afterlife.
Blombos Cave, South Africa
The earliest documented art: a set of shells strung together to form a necklace and a piece of stone incised with hatch marks. 75,000 years old. (Made by modern humans)
Upper Paleolithic
Time period from about 40kya to 11kya (the end of the last ice age). It is characterized by modern human presence in Western Europe.
Aurignacian
Date: 40kya - 26kya
Characteristics: bladelets and split based bone points. |
Gravettian
Date: 26kya - 23kya
Characteristics: small hunting points |
Solutrean
Date: 23kya - 20kya
Characteristics: bifacial points |
Magdalenian
