What are the 2 major Aquatic Ecosystem

- FreshWater Ecosystem

- Marine

Fresh Water Ecosystem

- only 3 percent of the earths water is 3%

-Streams, Rivers, ponds, and lakes

Streams and Rivers

Mountain stream the water flows slowly

at lower elevations, streams are warmer and often contain less oxygen, affecting the organisms that can live in them

Ponds and lakes

- Lakes are generally larger and deeper than ponds

- Ponds are often shallow enough that sunlight can reach the bottom, allowing plant to grow

Marine Ecosystems

Saltwater

Estuary

Are found where the fresh water of a river meets the salt water of an ocean

Internal zone

Location - between the highest high-tide line and the lowest low-tide line

Inhabitants - sea stars and barnacles survive sudden change in water levels and temperature that occur with high and low tides

Neritic zone

Location - Region of shallow water found below the low tides line and extending over the continental shelf

Inhabitants - sunlight passes through the sallow water algae living here

Surface zone, open ocean

Location - Beyond the neritic zone about 200 meters deep

Inhabitants - photosynthesis only occurs at the top tuna and swordfish live here

Deep Zone

Open Ocean

Location - ocean floor

Inhabitants - very little if sunlight even passes through animals feed on the remains of organisms that sink down, giant squid and anglerfish live here
