Religion as a conservative force

MARX - Most religions have traditional conservative belies about moral issues and oppose changes that allow people more freedom - Catholic Church. Religion also functions to keep things as they are.


FUNCTIONALISTS see religion as a conservative force maintaining social stability


MARXISTS & FEMINISTS see religion that supports the existing social structure and as a means of social control



Religion as a force for change

WEBER - Argues that the religious views of Calvinism helped to bring about major social change.


Calvinism has four main beliefs; Predestination, Divine transcendence, Asceticism and The idea of a vocation.


Capitalism didn't take off in India because of the lack of these Calvinist values.

Religion and social protest

BRUCE - The American Civil Rights movement - Religion is an ideological resource. - protesters used religion for motivation and legitimation.


They do this by; Taking the moral high ground, Channelling dissent, Acting as an honest broker and mobilising public opinion.


The New Christian Right - politically conservative group that wants to make abortion, divorce and homosexually illegal.


HOWEVER hasn't been successful as hasn't had the backing.

Marxism, religion and change

They argue that religious ideas can have RELATIVE AUTONOMY - independent from the Capitalist society.


BLOCH - Religions have a dual character, sometimes being a force for change (rebellions) as well as stability - can make people dream of a better life. This may lead people to try and create social change.


GRAMSCI - Ruling class are able to use ideas such as religion to maintain control.


HOWEVER - religion can sometimes challenge the ruling class.
