Importance of Fort Sumter?

The marked start of the Civil War. Cannons were fired into this fort and after 34 hours of non-lethal during it surrendered. Upper South seceded. Confederate victory.

Importance of Border States? (Civil War times)

Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland. Crucial for both sides, they would almost double the maifacturing capacity of the South and increased its horses and mules by half. They are called "border states" because 1) on the north-south border.

North had bigger army, more people, more supplies, more money, industrial might (90% more wow), railroad mileage, and a better navy.


South had better generals, better soldiers, less supplies and money, home ground, stronger motivation and better defensive tactics

During the Civil War it was the first time that Congress passed the draft requiring men to join the army to fight for their respective region

Morill Tariff Act

Increased tariffs by about 5 to 10%. The war soon drive these rates even higher.

Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix

Helped transform nursing from a lowly position to a respective profession. SALLY TOMPKINS: ran an infirmary for confederates and earned a rank of captain. Dix was the superintendent of Army Nurses For the Union Army. In charge of hiring nurses. Clara formed the Red Cross

Life in the hospitals (Civil War times)

No real anesthetics. 75% of surgeries were amputations. 2 years for a doctorate degree. Plenty of painkillers were prescribed opiates. Common to pick up diseases and infections.
