Cognitive Approach to Language Learning:
Cognitive approach to language learning forcuses on CONCEPTS. While words and grammar are important, with cognitive approach, the focus is on using language for conceptual purposes. This appeaoch focuses heavily on students' learning styles, and it cannot necessarily be pinned down as having specific techniques. Rather, it is more of aphilosophy of instruction.
Motivational Approach to Language Learning:
When teachers work to motivate students to learn a language, they do things to help reduce fear and to assist students in identifying with native speakers of the target language.
Functional Approach to Language Learning:
In this approach, the teacher focuses on communicative elements. For example, a first grade English as a Second Langauge teacher might help students learn phrases that will assist them in finding a restroom, asking for help on the playground, etc. Many fuctionally-based adult ESOL programs help learners with travel-related phrases and words.
Total Physical Response:
This is a kinesthetic approach that combines language learning and physcial movement . In essence, students learn new vocabulary and grammar by responding with physical motion to verbal commands. Some people say it is particularly effective because the physcial actions help to create good brain connections with the words.
