Where do you palpate the uterus through the abdominal wall of the cat and dog?
In the intact female, the uterus will not be palpable if the animal is healthy and non-pregnant. However, pyometra or late pregnancy will enlarge the uterus such that it will be palpated as a large tubular structure dorsal to the bladder. Individual fetuses may be palpated in mid-gestation.
What is the blood supply to the ovaries? (aa.)
Aorta --> ovarian aa. at fourth lumbar vertebra, cross caudal kidney and enter mesovarian border (broad ligament)
What is the drainage of the uterus? (vv.)
ovarian v (drains cranial end of uterus) --> caudal vena cava
What is the drainage of the ovaries? (vv.)
Ovarian vv. --> caudal vena cava. Left ovarian vein may join Left renal vein --> caudal vena cava
What is the blood supply to the cranial uterine horn? (aa.)
Aorta --> ovarian a. --> uterine branch of ovarian artery
Is a swelling in the lateral wall of the vestibule in the bitch normal or abnormal?
It is normal erectile tissue - the vestibular bulb
Where is the urethral tubercle?
With the uretheral opening. Find at the level of the pubic symphysis. Can bulge out
What is the fossa clitoridis?
The clitoral fossa is an area easily confused for the urethral tubercle and many students catheterize (mistake!)
What's special about the cervix?
The external orifice faces ventrally. Seals uterus from the outside.
What is the dorsal ridge of the vagina made from?
cervix extending, means no fornix here (only on ventral side)
Is a swelling in the lateral wall of the vestibule normal or abnormal?
NORMAL erectile tissue: the vestibular bulb
What is the blood supply (aa.) to the uterine tube?
Aorta--> ovarian artery --> uterine branch of ovarian artery
What is the main blood supply to the uterus?
Aorta --> internal iliac --> internal pudendal --> vaginal artery. Anastomoses with ovarian artery and also supplies vagina.
What organs does the internal iliac --> internal pudendal --> vaginal artery supply?
vagina, uterus, bladder, ureters and (rest of genital tract?). *BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU LIGATE FOR SPAY, may compromise circulation
What's important about drainage on the left hand side?
Left ovarian vein may drain into left renal vein instead of caudal vena cava. Sometimes you must remove kidney (nephrectomy) and avoid tying off this vessel that drains into left renal vein. Could compromise reproductive tract.
Why is important to palpate the cervix during an ovarihysterectomy?
To remove as much of uterine body as possible
What are the correct terms for the parts of the uterus?
Uterine horns combine to form the uterine body **NOT OVIDUCT**
Where is the transition from vagina to vestibulum?
Where the urethra enters the reproductive tract. (urethral tubercle)
