What is a Computer network? Name three main types of networks.

A computer network is any system that allows computers to send signals to other computers in electronic form.


Three main types of networks are:


1. )Local Area Network- In this type of network, the computers that are connected are usually connected in the the same building. (Eg.A school)


2.)Wide Area Network- This type of network connects computers that are spread out over a large area such as an island, or the whole Caribbean, or even across the ocean.


3.) A Metropolitan Area Network-It Connects computers that are in a large city or district.

What is bandwidth? Explain and give examples for: i) broadband,ii)narrowband,iii)voiceband
Bandwidth is defined as the amount of data that can be send via a connection.
Broadband connections carry sigalns with alot of data.
Narrowband connections are used for text based messages
Voiceband is used for calls and is typically quite slow.

3.Half-duplex

1. Simplex communication send signals in only one direction.


Eg. Television




2. Duplex communication sends signals in both directions simultaneously

3.Half Duplex communcation works in both directions but can only do it one at a time
