•1st half of book 1-6 in narrative prose, in 3rd person (about Daniel), with a setting in the 6th century BC
• 2nd half 7-12 records apocalyptic visions of Daniel, in first person, with major focus on historical period in the second century BC
Daniel interpretation
Daniel's vision of a coming kingdom center in the promised Messiah.
•the focus is on the rise and fall of the great empires leading up to the coming of the Messiah.
•the PURPOSE of Daniel is to proclaim to a despairing and near hopeless people: THE EXILE WILL END. GOD WILL RESTORE HIS SUFFERING PEOPLE!
•The book of Daniel is bilingual: chapters 1 and 8-12 in Hebrew, chapters 2-7 in Aramaic.

Neb. dream: a composite statue of gold, silver, bronze, iron (image of 4 kingdoms) "feet of clay" suggests these kingdoms will end. (same flow of history as visions of chapters 7 & 8!)

•Leopard with 4 heads & wings - Greece with Hellenistic kingdoms (Macedonia, Syria, Egypt, Asia Minor)
•10 horned beast-Rome (not clearly identified) Rome only beginning to expand by 2nd century BC-It is here where Revelation 13 draws it's imagery in depicting the Roman Empire. During this fourth kingdom the "Son of Man" would appear.
