the jay treaty was supposed to get
compensation for seized cargoes, reimbursement to southern planters whose slaves had become free in the fight with GB and make GB get out of frontier forts
John Jay's treaty ended up
failing to a dress the captured cargo and the lost slaves
granted the british 18 months to leave
made americans pay debts planters owed to GB firms from before the war

was started by adams, the first undeclared war with france
because of the quasi war, republicans (pro french)mobs roamed the capital--adams, fearing for his safety moved to muffle the opposition with
the alien and sedition acts, which made conspiracies or revolts illegal and penalized those who wrote or said anything against the president or congress
the alien acts made the wait for citizenship longer and required fed registration
to oppose the alien and sedition acts, because they didn't have the votes to repeal them, Jeff and Madison wrote
the virginia and kentucky resolves
resolutions condeming (they ewere against the bill of rights) the acts
set forth the idea that state governments could nullify laws that were against perosnal liberties
