weather

an area's temperature,precipitation,humidity, wind speed, cloud cover, and other physical conditions

Definition of climate and 4 factors that affect it

region's general pattern of weather conditions over a long time (years,decades,centuries)

4 main factors- Temperature & Precipitation, Latitude & Elevation

What are the four factors of global air circulation?

Uneven heating,temperature & precipitation, rotation of the earth, prop. of air, water, and land

Wind

provides nutrients transports pollen, drives ocean currents, controls temperature

High pressure & Low pressure

High=Good,sunny weather

Low= Rainy

Global warming

Global warming is needed for life, but humans have accelerated it. Without it, it would be too cold.

biomes

regions characterized by climate,soil,plants,and animals

Tropical Rainforest

hot,humid,a lot of rain,broadleaf evergreen plants,trees w/ shallow roots & bases,ground level=little vegetation,vines

Taiga

coniferous evergreen trees,plant diversity is low,low amounts of rain,very cold,cold winters,wet summers

Arctic Tundra

little rain,very cold,low growing plants,tall plants lose too much heat,permafrost

Grassland

seasonal drought, grazing herbivores, occasional fires,low average rain, average temperatures,enough rain to support grass but not trees

Desert

rain is low,little vegetation,during day=hot,during night=cold,plants & animals store water,beat the heat & every drop of water counts

Chaparral

moderate climate,periodic fires,average precipitation,thin/not very fertile soil,dense low growing evergreen shrubs & trees,long warm dry summers,found in coastal areas

mountain biome

snow peaks that reflect solar radiation and gradually release water,biodiverse,regulate climate

Savannas

tropical grassland,scattered trees,enormous herds of large animals,warm year round,wet & dry seasons,birth place of mankind

niche specialization

minimizes competition among herbivores in the savanna Ex: giraffes feed at the top of the tree,elephants feed at the bottom

inland/coastal wetland

inland=freshwater, coastal= salt water

ocean life zone

buoyancy,prevents life from drying out & becoming too hot and cold, medium for eggs & larvae, no need to conserve,filter UV rays, dilutes & disperses pollutants,biodiverse b/c of depth,few habitats,difficult to count organisms,less common for endemicism,plants are microscopic,smaller herbivores than on land,foodwebs more complicated,high reproduction,short life cycles,species separated from parents at birth,difficult to monitor

ocean layers

1. surface (euphotic zone) 2.middle (bathyal zone) 3.bottom (abyssal zone)

factors that determine # of organisms & types

temperature,sunlight,dissolved oxygen, nutrients

coastal zone

10% of earth's ocean area, but contains 90% of marine species.High PPP,warm,nutrient-rich,shallow,from high tide to gently sloping.

Why are coastal wetlands and estuaries the most productive

All of the nutrients flow into it.
