Euphemism
substation of an agreeable or at least non-offensive expression for the one whose plainer meaning might be harsh or unpleasant. I.e. No longer with us. In a better place
Euphony
a succession of harmonious sounds used in poetry or prose; the opposite of cacophony. "The babbling brook bubbled cheerfully along the banks
Explication
the art of interpreting or discovering the meaning of a text. This usually involves a close reading and special attention to figurative language
Anecdote
short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event. Most frequently refers to an incident in the life of a person
Satire
a work that targets human vices and follies or social institutions and conventions for reform or ridicule. Satire is best seen as a style of writing rather than a purpose for writing. It can be recognized by the many devices used effectively by the satirist: irony, wit, parody, caricature, hyperbole, understatement, and sarcasm. Good satire is thought provoking and insightful about the human condition
Implicit
implied, rather than expressly stated: Implicit agreement
Explicit
fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated; leaving nothing merely implied
Extended Metaphor
a metaphor developed at great length, occurring frequently in or throughout a work
Persona
the voice or figure of the author who tells and structures the story; the persona telling the story is not necessarily the personality & voice of the author!
Antecedent
the word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun. -AP exam sometimes has questions regarding this on the multiple-choice section. Sally lost her notebook. ---> Sally is the antecedent
Aposiopesis
stopping abruptly and leaving a statement unfinished. i.e. "I've got to make the team or I'll---"
Ambiguity
the multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, or a word, phrase, sentence, or passage. "The police shot the rioters with guns"
Foil
a person or thing that makes another seem better by contras. King Duncan's kindness provides a striking contrast to Macbeth's cruel tyranny
Homily
this term literally means "sermon" but more informally it can include any serious talk, speech, or lecture involving moral or spiritual advice
Paralipsis
the technique of drawing attention to something by claiming not to mention it. "I'm not going to mention your tardies, but since you have 15 of them don't be late to class again."
