Cranial cavity
contains the brain. It is surrounded by the bones of the skull and is continuous with the vertebral canal.
Spinal canal
contains the spinal cord. It is encased by the bones forming the vertebral column and is continuous with the cranial cavity.
Thoracic cavity
contains the organs of the thorax and is subdivided into pleural and pericardial cavities. Between the pleural cavities is a partition known as the mediastinum.
Pleural cavities
