1. What are the indications for TEE during cardiac surgery?
a. Used to direct the surgical procedure and diagnose unanticipated problems and complications.
b. Monitors cardiac function
2. What are the Three categories of TEE usefulness based on strength of evidence in lit:
a. Category 1: Valve repair, congential heart defects, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, obstructive cardiomyopathy, aortic dissection, infective endocarditis, and life threatening hemodynamics.

b. Category 2: Monitoring for MI, valve replacement,cardiac aneurysms, intracardiac tumors

c. Category 3: myocardial perfusion, monitoring for emboli, placement for intraoperative balloon pumps and PA catheters.
3. What are the complications of TEE?
a. Dental /oral trauma
b. Laryngeal dysfunction
c. Endotracheal tube displacement
d. UGI bleed
e. Esophageal perforation
what are teh ABSOLUTE contraindications of TEE?
1. pt refusal
2. esophageal stricture
3. Esophageal perforation
4. Obstructing esophageal neoplasms
5. Active GI bleed
6. Cervical spine instability
What are the 4 modes of TEE monitoring?
1. 2D
2. Pulsed wave doppler
3. Color wave Doppler
4. Continous Wave doppler
What is 2D TEE used for?
2D is used for evaluating ventricular function, Valvular function, Masses and defects
What is pulsed Wave TEE doppler used for?
Used for low velocity flows such as : pulmonary veins, mitral valve flows
What is Color Wave TEE doppler used for?
Measures direction and velocity of flow.
Blue= flow away from probe.
Red= flow toward probe
White/Green = high velocity flows
What is the Continuous Wave TEE Doppler used for?
Measures velocities along entire cursor (less specific than pulsed wave)
Used for high velocity flows: Aortic valve or stenotic valve.
Does TEE provide a Quantitative or Qualitative assessment of the heart?
Qualitative
