What is true about mechanisms or anaphylaxis?
The 1st exposure to an allergen results in B cell sensitization and activation, ultimately stimulating plasma cells to secrete IgE, and sensitizing mast cells. The 2nd exposure results in massive degranulation of mast cells which underlies all of the symptoms.
The immune system has specific and non specific defenses. What does that mean?
Specific defenses refer to an adaptive immunity response when exposure to an antigen results in an antibody- mediated response.
What cells perform immunological surveillance?
NK cells
What does a plasma cell do?
Plasma cells produce and secrete antibodies
The lymphatic system....
Continuously monitors the interstitial fluid for foreign cells, like bacteria and viruses
What 3 physiological systems does the lymphatic system interact with to do its job?
Cardiovascular, Digestive, and Immune
How are lymphatic vessels different from capillaries?
Lymphatic capillaries have larger diameters compared to capillaries.
Lymph nodes enlarge during infection because...
The number of lymphocytes and phagocytes in the node increase after stimulation by infection.
The inflammatory response...
- Produces local swelling, because local blood vessels are dilated and permeability is increased.
- Is triggered by the release of K+ from damaged cells
- Is stimulated by th release of prostaglandins from mast cells.
- Is accompanied by pain, resulting from chemicals released by mast cells that stimulate sensory neurons.
The complement system
-Compliments the actions of antibodies.
- Contains 11 complement proteins that circulate in the blood and hat work as a cascade of chemical reactions.
- Has a classical pathway, that is the most rapid and effective, and an alternative pathway.
- The alternative pathway begins when several compliment proteins interact in the plasma, and can be triggered by exposure to the capsule of bacterium.
- The classical pathway begins with the binding of a compliment protein to an antibody already attached to the specific antigen.
Interferons...
Are small proteins (cytokines) released by virally infected cells that stimulate the immune response.
