Mesopotamia

"land between rivers" fertile valley of Tigris and Euphrates river (Iraq.) one of the four river valley regions. irrigated water from rivers , first legit civ. first sort of unorganized civ, promoted city life, social classes and work specialty.

Sumerian

people who lived in the land of sumer in the southern half of mesopotamia. lots of agriculture, lots of irrigation. dominant people of the area. center of political/ military authority in city. controlled the civ and made great devs in agriculture.

Semitic

group of people who spokes tongues in the semitic family of languages ex. aramaic, hebrew and phoenician. nomadic herders who went to meso from Arabian/ syrian desert. Mixed in with the sumerians. made the cities more populated.

Phoenician

it was a semitic language, ancestor of greek and roman alphabets. inhabited ancient phoenicia. good trade and manufacturing. First alphabet, only consonants. basis of two languages, helped make alphabet.

Ziggurats

distinctive stepped pyramids, had temples and altars for the deity. citities built around temple. showed meso building ability. importance of religion in meso.

Sargon of Akkab

creator of empire in mesopotamia. good admin and warrior. minister of the king of kush, got army and took over the cities. placed governors, taxed trade. turned akhaa into wealthiest city in the world. first leader of an empire.

Hammurabi

Babylonian conqueror. king of four quarters of the world. empire dominated meso. centralized bureaucratic ruler. regulate taxes, ruled from babylon. established code of law, good behavior and bad punishments. Made first unofficial code of law.

"law of retaliation" offenders suffer punishments resembling their crime. laws depend on social classes. if noble to commoner didnt matter. eye for an eye was used, showed punishment should fit the crime

Assyrians

returned imperial rule, come from north, establish state in tigris river. built cities because of trade route locations. had powerful army. used iron weapons. took over syria, palestine, anatolia, egypt. brought wealth, comfort. second big empire in meso.

Nebuchadnezzar

king of the new babylonian empire. made the city super fancy, made hanging gardens of babylon.

Cuneiform

writing system made by sumerians where graphic symbols represented sounds. had syllables. "wedge shaped" because style left line. wrote in clay. first written language.

Monotheism

believing in only one god, brought up by moses. shaped christianity and jewish religion.

Yahweh

the one and ultimate God taught by Moses. creator/sustainer of the world. personal god, worship alone. started monotheism. god of current bible.

Indo-European

based off of the places where the languages were made (sanskrit, greek, latin, hindi, indian). all came from place and separated. orgiinally from Ukraine, south Russia. Domesticated horses. influenced lots of languages.

indo-european migrants. 1900 BCE went to central plain of Anatolia. imposed language, built kingdom, took over babylonian empire. dominant power in southwest asia. war chariots, refined iron metallurgy. improved tech.CHARIOT
