Net Energy
The usable amount of "high-quality energy" available from a given quantity of an energy resource.
Petroleum or crude oil
Oil as it comes out of the ground
Peak production
After years of pumping the pressure in a well drops and its rate of conventional crude oil production starts to decline.
Petrochemicals
Some of the products of crude oil distillation
Proven oil reserves
Deposits from which conventional crude oil can be extracted profitably at current prices and current technology
Unproven oil reserves
Deposits that consist of probable reserves with a 50% chance of recovery and possible reserves with a 10%-40% chance of recovery.
Tar Sand or Oil Sand
mixture of clay, sand ,water and a combustible material called bitumen
Bitumen
A thick, sticky, tarlike heavy oil with a high sulfur content
Shale oil
Oil distilled from oily rocks containing hydrocarbons called kerogen
Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)
When a natural gas field is tapped, propane and butane gases are liquified
Natural Gas
A mixture of gases of which 50-90% is methane (CH4) and small amounts of heavier gaseous hydrocarbons (e.g. propane & butane)
Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)
Natural gas converted at high pressure and low temp into a highly flammable liquid to be transported. It cam be heated and converted back to the gaseous state to be distributed by pipeline
Synthetic natural gas (SNG)
Solid coal that is converted into natural gas by a process called "coal gasification" which removes sulfur & other impurities
