tricyclic antidepressants

Dry mouth, weight gain, irritability, confusion, constipation- block the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine

SSRI's

Agitation, insomnia, nausea, difficulty achieving orgasm, rare cases of increased risk of suicide. They act by blocking the reuptake of serotonin which results in more of that neurotransmitter in the synapse

Bupropion

also a smoking cessation aid. Inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. No side effects

Neurotransmitters related to depression

norepinephrine, epinephrine, serotonin, dopamine

Side effects of commonly used antidepressants

agitation, insomnia, nausea, difficulty achieving orgasm, rare cases of increased risk for suicide

Benzodiazepines

tardive dyskinesia-

repetitive, involuntary movements of jaw, tongue, face, and mouth and body tremors resulting from extended use of traditional antipsychotic drugs

Clozapine

This is an atypical antipsychotic which do not create tardive dyskinesia. This blocks a different type of dopamine receptor Side effects- weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, reduction of white blood cells

Prefrontal lobotomy

consists of severing the connections between the prefrontal lobes and the lower portion of the brain. This procedure often left people with profound changes in personality, often resulting in them being listless or subject to seizures. Also, some patients were reduced to vegetative states- no longer in use

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

involves passing an electrical current through a person's brain in order to induce a seizure and is used to treat severe depression

Free Association

Allow the patient to talk about whatever comes to mind Do not make recommendations, suggestions or answer questions related to the “issue”
