Where are the registration marks required to be placed on a fixed wing aircraft?

On the vertical tail surface or on the side of the fuselage.

What is the general required dimensions of registration numbers on the side of a fixed wing aircraft?

12 in tall, 2/3 as wide as they are high. Letters m and w maybe as wide as they are high. The number one is 1/6 as wide as it is high.

What is the regulation regarding the color of the registration marks?

The color must contrast with the background and the legible.

Why should wooden wings spars be finished with a transparent vanish?

Allows decay or rot to be detected on the wood.

Why is a retarder used in dope when the dope is being sprayed in humid conditions?

The retarder slows the drying of the dope and keeps it from blushing.

When an aircraft is being recovered, when is fungicidal dope applied to the fabric?

With the first coat of dope that is brushed into the fabric.

What will happen if dope is sprayed over an enameled surface?

It will penetrate the enamel surface and cause it to swell.

What are the two basic types of dope used on fabric covered aircraft?

Nitrate and butyrate dope

What kind of dope is used on a polyester synthetic fabric that has been heat shrunk on an aircraft structure?

Nontautening butyrate dope.

Why are some portions of the aircraft structure dope proofed before they are covered with fabric?

To keep the fabric from sticking to the structure when the first coat of dope is applied.

What is meant by dope blushing, and what causes it?

A condition in which dope finishes has moisture from the atmosphere condensing on the surface and causes some cellulose to precipitate from the finish.

Blushing is typically caused by low temperatures or humidity being too high or by drifts or sudden changes in temperature.

What can be done to remedy blushing that has formed on the doped surface and that's just been sprayed?

Spray a very light mist coat of a mixture of one part retarder to two parts of thinner over the blush area.

Allow to dry, and spray yet another coat, and if it does not remove the blush then it has to be sanded off and a new dope applied.

What is a rejuvenator?

Slow drying finishing material that has potent solvents and plasticizers that soften a dried surface film and restore resilience to the film.

Does rejuvenator restores strength to the fabric?

No, it only restores resilience to the finish

Why is the first coat of dope brushed onto the fabric?

For thorough penetration and encapsulation of all the fibers.

What is the general reason for runs and sags in a finish that has been sprayed unto a flat surface?

When too much dope has been applied, or the film is to thick.

What is the most common cause for dope roping?

Either the dope was improperly thinned, or it was too cold.

What causes pinkholes in a dope finish?

Excessive atomizing air pressure on the spray gun.

Why should the first coat of dope be thinned?

To ensure proper penetration and encapsulation of all the fibers.

Why is aluminum pigmented dope used on a fabric-covered aircraft?

To protect the clear dope and the fabric from the harmful effects of the Sun.

What safety precaution must be observed when sweeping a paint room that has dried dope or lacquer over spray on the floor?

Wet down the floor before it's swept, with water to avoid static electricity from sparking while sweeping the floor which can cause a fire.

Why should a fabric covered surface be electrically grounded when dry sanding it?

Dry sanding creates enough static electricity on the surface and that can cause a spark and ignite the dope fumes inside the structure.

What instructions must be followed when covering and finishing an aircraft with materials specified in a supplemental type certificate (STC)?

Instructions that are part of the supplemental type certificate.

What finishing material must be used when recovering an aircraft using an STC?

Finishing material specified by the STC.

How thick should a coat of wash primer be that is used on an aluminum alloy aircraft structure?

It should be thin enough that it does not hide the surface of the metal.

When mixing epoxy paint, should the converter be added to the resin or the resin to the converter?

Convert should always be added to the resin.

What are three types of primer that may be used when painting an aircraft?

Zinc chromate primer, wash primer, and epoxy primer.

What type of thinner is used on zinc chromate primer?

Toluol or toluen.

What type of primer is used when the maximum protection of the metal is required?

Epoxy primer

What should be done to corroded aluminum Alloy surface after the corrosion has been removed by mechanical methods?

Treat the surface with chemical conversion coating before the top coats are applied.

What may be done to a surface to prevent filiform corrosion beneath the topcoat?

Make sure the primer is properly and completely cured.

How is it finish removed from a fiberglass aircraft component that is being repaired?

Sand it off, paint remover can soften the resin of which the component is made.

How can a vinyl film decal be removed from an aluminum alloy office?

Use a saturated cloth with cyclohexanone or MEK over the decal until it is softened and then scrape off the surface with a plastic scraper.

What is the cause of poor adhesion between the topcoat and the fill coats on a fabric surface?

Too much aluminum powder in the aluminum pigmented dope.

What is the cause of a rough finish on a freshly sprayed surface?

Too high atomizing pressure on the spray gun.

What causes sags and runs on a surface that has just been sprayed?

Too much finishing materials being applied in one coat.

What causes orange peel, or spray mottle, in a finish?

Incorrect paint viscosity or improper setting of the spray gun.

What causes pinholes in a finish?

Excessive atomizing air on the spray gun.

What causes blushing on the dope finish?

Too high humidity.

What causes fisheyes in the finish?

Localized surface contamination.
