Sound
the sensation perceived by the organs of hearing when vibrations (sound waves) reach the ear
Vibration
the periodic motion of a substance.
Compression and Rarefaction
The alternation of increased (compression) and decreased (rarefaction) pressure in the air caused by an activated (vibrating) surface or air column.
Frequency
the number of compression-rarefaction cycles that occur per unit of time, usually one second.
Pitch
Variations in frequency which produce a "highness" or "lowness" of a tone.
Intensity
the volume of a tone.
Duration
the length of time a pitch, or tone, is sounded.
Timbre
the tone quality or color of a sound. Is the result of the ear perceiving a certain harmonic series.
Harmonic Series
the various pitches produced simultaneously by a vibrating body. It results because a vibrating body vibrates in sections as well as whole parts.
Partials
the pitches produced simultaneously by the vibrating sections.
fundamental
the first partial. the lowest frequency. the loudest pitch. the specific pitch of the musical tone.
