narrator
the speaker of the one from whom the story is told
point of view
to identify the narrator of a story, describing any part he or she plays in the events and any limitations placed upon his or her knowledge is to identify point of view
omniscient narrator
the narrator sees into the minds of all of the characters and is able to tell what characters are thinking and feeling
limited omniscience
the narrator sees into the mind of only one character in the story and tells what that character sees, thinks, feels, hears.
objective point of view
the narrator does not enter the mind of any character but describes events from the outside, telling only what is observable.
stream of consciousness
a kind of selective omniscience: the presentation of thoughts and sens impressions in a life-like fashion - randomly
interior monologue
an extended presentation of a character's thoughts, not in the helter-skelter order of stream of consciousness.
setting
the time and place of a story
stock character
a character who is known for some outstanding trait or traits. He/she is almost a stereotype rather than a unique character. He/she has little description since we already know him/her. He/she is a recognizable type.
flat character
has one outstanding characteristic, a few distinguishing marks. Can be easily summed up.
round character
characters who are represented with more detail and depth; usually a main character. cannot be captured with single word or phrase.
static character
a character who does not change through the story. He/she remains fixed.
dynamic character
a character that experiences a change as a result of events.
allusion
a reference to a famous person, place or thing in history, in fiction, or in actuality.
caricature
an extreme exaggeration of one or several human characteristics.
