What is a Democracy?
government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
What is a Separation of Powers?
Basic powers are separated between three distinct and independent Branches of Government.
What is limited Government?
Government must only do those things that people have given it the power to do.
What is Popular Sovereignty?
All political power rests with the people.
What are Inherent Powers?
Powers that belong to the government as a sovereign state because all governments have these powers.
What are concurrent powers?
Powers shared by the national and the state governments.
What are implied powers?
Powers that are not expressly stated, but are reasonably implied based on the necessary and proper clause.

A primary where only declared members of a political party may vote.
What is an open primary?
A primary where any qualified voter may vote
What is a session in Congress?
A session is that period of time during each year that Congress assembles and does business.
What is gerrymandering?
The act of drawing the boundaries for Congressional districts to favor one political party over another
What are the qualifications for becoming a U.S. Senator?
Must be at least 30 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at least 9 years, and live in the state elected.
What are the qualifications for vecomina a U.S. Representative?
Must be at least 25 years of age, U.S. citizen of for at least 7 years.
What power is granted to Congress under the "Necessary and Proper" clause of the Constitution?
Congress may pass all laws necessary to carry out the expressed powers granted in the Constitution.
What are expressed powers?
Powers that are spelled out expressly in the constitution.
What did the Virgina Plan favor?
Big states, bicameral legislatures based on population, and three branches with separation of powers.
What did the New jersey plan favor?
Small states, a unicameral legislature with equal representation, government has power to tax and regulate trade.
What is the Supreme Law of the Land?
The Constitution.
What is the difference between the Senate and House of Representatives.
One is an upper house, the other is a lower house, number of members in each house, length of terms, and powers.
What is the incumbent effect?
When candidates have a hard time of winning a seat due to the popularity of the current seat holder.
