Natural Law
A basis for all human conduct, and includes unchanging moral principles. Is supposed to be inherent in human nature, and does not have to be thought out.
Separation of Powers
Power is separated into different branches, and no branch can gain absolute power or abuse the power they are given.
Checks and Balances
Each branch of government limits the powers of the other branches in the system. Guards against absolute power.
Divided Government
An unusual case where the presidency and congress are controlled by two different people.
Direct Primary
Voters in a party directly select the candidates who will run for their party
Initiative
The opportunity or power to act before others do
Referendum
a vote taken by the general public to decide an important legislative or policy issue directly, as opposed to having the issue decided by a representative assembly or other legislative agency

An order or regulation issued by an executive or administrative agency of the government such as a president, having the force of law
Executive Privilege
The right of the President, or any other executive power to withhold information from Congress or the courts
Impoundment
Circumstances where the executive--president or governor--declines to release or spend money the legislature has directed be expended
