1. THE SKULL (8 CRANIAL BONES, 14 FACIAL BONES)
2. ASSOCIATED BONES (6 AUDITORY OSSICLES & HYOID BONE)
3. VERTEBRAL COLUMN (24 VERTEBRAE, THE SACRUM AND THE COCCYX)
4. THORACIC CATE (STERNUM AND 24 RIBS)
NAME THE 8 CRANIAL BONES?
1. OCCIPTAL BONE
2.FRONTAL BONE
3.SPENOID BONE
4.ETHMOID BONE
5-6. PARIETAL BONES
7-8. TEMPORAL BONES
CRANIAL CAVITY
A FLUID-FILLED CHAMBER THAT CUSHIONS AND SUPPORTS THE BRAIN.
SUPERFICIAL FACIAL BONES
THE PAIRED MASILLARY
LACRIMAL
NASAL
ZYGOMATIC BONES
MANDIBLE
DEEPER FACIAL BONES
THE PAIRED PALANTINE BONES
INFERIOR NASAL CONCHAE
MEDIAN VOMER
WHAT DO THE SUPERFICIAL FACIAL BONE DO?
THEY PROVIDE AREAS FOR THE ATTACHMENT OF MUSCLES THAT CONTROL FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND ASSIST IN THE MANIPULATING FOOD.
WHAT DO THE DEEPER FACIAL BONES DO?
THEY HELP SEPARATE THE ORAL AND NASAL CAVATIES, INCREASE THE SURFACE AREA OF THE NASAL CAVITIES, OR HELP FOR THE NASAL SEPTUM,(SEPTUM=WALL) WHICH SUBDIVIDES THE NASAL CAVITY.
WHAT ARE SINUSES AND WHAT ARE THEIR FUNCTION?
SINUS ARE AIR-FILLED CHAMBERS. THEIR TWO MAJOR FUNCTIONS ARE (1) THEY MAKE BONE MUCH LIGHTER AND (2) THE MUCOUS MEMBRANE LINING THEM PRODUCES MUCUS THAT MOISTENS AND CLEAND THE AIR IN AND AJACENT TO THE SINUS.
SUTURES
JOINTS OR ARTICULATIONS, FORMED WHEN TWO BONES INTERCONNECT. THE BONES ARE TIED FIRMLY TOGETHER WITH DENSE FIBROUS CONNECTIVE TISSUE.
4 MAJOR SUTURES OF THE SKULL
1. LAMBDOID SUTURE
2. CORONAL SUTURE
3. SAGGITAL SUTURE
4. SQUAMOUS SUTURES
LAMBDOID SUTURE
(LAMBDA+EIDOS=SHAPE) ARCHES ACROSS THE POSTERIOR SURFACE OF THE SKULL; SEPARATES THE OCCIOITAL BONE FROM THE TWO PARIETAL BONES. ONE OR MORE SUTURAL BONES (WORMIAN BONES) MAY BE PRESENT ALONG THE MABDOID SUTURE.
CORONAL SUTURE
ATTACHES THE FRONTAL BONE TO THE PARIETAL BONES OF EITHER SIDE.
SAGITTAL SUTURE
EXTENDS FROM THE LAMBDOID SUTURE TO THE CORONAL SUTURE, BETWEEN THE PARIETAL BONES.
SQUAMOUS SUTURES
ARE ON EACH SIDE OF THE SKULL; FORMS THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TEMORAL BONE AND THE PARIETAL BONE OF THAT SIDE.
SUTURAL (WORMIAN) BONES
ONE OR MORE FLAT BONES THAT MAY BE PRESENT ALONG THE LAMBDOID SUTURE.
