Aphorism
a concise statement of a principle, made in a matter of fact tone to state a general truth or opinion that is generally understood to be a universal truth
Assonance
refers to repetition of sounds produced by vowels within a sentence or phrase. (a kind of alliteration) repetition only in vowel sounds.
Connotation
associations made with words that go being the literal or dictionary definition. the suggesting of a meaning by a word apart from the thing it describes.
Denotation
exactly what a word means, literal meaning of the word
Diction
the distinctive tone or tenor of an author's writings. Authors choice of words, mood, attitude, dialect and style of writing. selection of certain words or phrases.
Elegy
song/poem expressing sorrow
End-stopped
marked by a logical rhetorical pause at the end
enjambment
running a sentence over a line break (no pause, opposite of end-stopped)
Epiphany
a sudden intuitive perception of a insight into reality or essential meaning of something
Extended metaphor
a metaphor introduced essential meaning and then further developed throughout the literary work.
Figurative Language
writing that appeals to the senses; descriptive formations of mental images
free verse
open form of poetry. verse whose meter is irregular in some respect, does not use consistent meter, patterns or rhyming. follows the rythym of natural speech.
imagery
when author uses words to create "mental images". not only limited to visual sensations. can include, hearing, feeling and taste.
lyric poem
a short poem that has a song like quality. usually articulates the interpretations, views and feelings of a single individual; or feelings.
Magic Realism
a style in which fantastic or imaginary and often unsettling images or events are written in a realistic manner. incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction ( associated with latin america)

Paradox

the use of components in a sentence that are gramatically same or similair in their construction, sound, etc. adds balance and smoothness to a sentence (repetition of phrases, etc)

the position of the narrator in relation to the story

person who is peaking formally before an audience
stream of consciousness
refers to an uninterrupted and unhindered collection and occurence of thoughts and ideas in the conscious mind. usually used to provide a narrative in the form of the character's thoughts instead of using dialogue
structure
how phrases, sentences, paragraphs, essays are constructed, and in what format.
style
how a writer says what they say
theme
subject/topic of representation of a literary work
Tone
the perspective or attitude that an author adopts with regards to a specific character, place etc. helps the reader know the authors feelings on the topic thus helping the reader understand the story
