  • Front
  • Back

A bone that has a body longer than it is wide, with epiphysis at each end. Tubular Structures.

Exp: Femur, humerus, radius, ulna, tibia, fibula, metacarpals, and metatarsals

Long Bones

Bones that are approximately as wide as they are long and have a primary function of providing support and stability with little movement.

Exp: carpals, tarsals

Short Bones

Bones that are strong and flat, with a main function of protecting bodies vital organs, and being a base for muscular attachment. Broad and slightly flat.

Exp: scapula, ilium, patella, frontal, temporal bone, and sternum

Flat Bones

Bones that don't fit into any other category.

Exp: vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx

Irregular Bones

Normally short or irregular bones that are embedded in tendons.

Exp: patella, flexor tendons of big toe and thumb

Sesamoid Bone
Depressions and Openings?

1. Foramen

2. Fossa

3. Groove

4. Meatus

5. Notch

6. Sinus

Opening; a hole for passage of:

-blood vessels

-nerves

-ligaments

Foramen
Depression; shallow basinlike depression in a bone, serves as an articular surface

Fossa

Depression or furrow that contains tendons and blood vessels.
Groove

Air filled cavity within a bone, lined with mucous membrane

Sinus
Indentation on the end of the bone

Notch
Projections/Processess that Fit Into Joints

1. Condyle

2. Eminence

3. Facet

4. Head

rounded articular projection that fits into other joints

Condyle
Protects joints, marks a junction
Eminence
Smooth, nearly flat articular surface between two bones
Facet
Rounded articular expansion carried on a narrow neck on the end of a bone
Head
Projections/Processes that are sites of Muscle and Ligament Attachment

1. Crest 6. Protruberance

2. Epicondyle 7. Spine

3. Line 8. Trochanter

4. Malleolus 9. Tubercle

5. Process 10. Tuberosity

Narrow Ridge on bone, usually prominent. Site of muscle/ligament attachment
Crest
Raised area on or above a condyle; site of muscle and ligament attachment
Epicondyle
Narrow ridge of bone; site of muscle and ligament attachment
Line
Any bony prominence site of muscle and ligament attachment
Process
Sharp, slender, often pointed projection; site of muscle and ligament attachment
Spine
Very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process on the femur
Trochanter
Small rounded projection or process that is site of muscle and ligament attachment
Tubercle
Large rounded projection; may be roughened site of muscle and ligament attachment
Tuberosity
Types of joints?

1. Ball-and-socket

2. Hinge

3. Gliding

4. Ellipsoid

5. Saddle

6. Pivot

Movement that straightens or opens the joint
extension
movement that bends a joint or brings bones closer together
flexion
appendages moving medially toward the body line, and laterally away from the body midline
adduction, abduction
Internal/External Rotation; occurs at shoulder and hip joints; swings in toward and away from midline
medial rotation, lateral rotation
Combination of flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction. Occurs at shoulder and hip.
Circumduction
Movement of the scapula and jaw up and down
Elevation and depression
Pivoting action of the forearm; carrying bowl of soup and prone to spill it
Supination and Pronation
Movement pertaining to the scapula, clavicle, head, and jaw. Movement anteriorly and posteriorly
Protraction and retraction
Movement that wanders from usual course; happens at mandible during talking or chewing
Deviation
