Minor V. Happerset
Upheld the power of the states to deny the rights of women to vote.
Poll Tax
A fee required to be paid when voting. Used to keep Blacks out of the Polls.
Williams V. Mississippi
Upheld the usage of literacy tests
Literacy Test
A test that requires the voter to read and interpret the Constitution to the official's satisfaction, which were white males. Used to deny Blacks at the polls.
Grandfather Clause
If the voter's father or grandfather had voted before 1867, they were automatically given a vote. Blacks were not able to vote before 1867, of course.
Homestead Act
Granted subsidies to transcontinental railroads. Republican Act
Munn V. Illinois
Stated that private property "affected with the public interest... must submit to being controlled by the public for the common good.
Wabash Decision
States are not allowed to deal with Interstate commerce.
ICC
Interstate Commerce Commission. Investigated and oversaw railroad activities. Led way to the FTC we have today.
Interstate Commerce Act
Formed the ICC. Spurred from the Wabash decision.

Pendleton Act

Raised tariffs approximately 4% and included a novel reciprocity provision.

First attempt to regulate big business. Was loosely termed so open to interpretation.

First federal interpretation of Sherman Antitrust Act. Ruled in favor of the management
Sherman Silver Purchase Act
Kept a limited form of silver coinage with congressional passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878. Lowered price of silver.
