What are the precautions with antiviral agents?

May lead to a SPK especially with viroptic due to the thimerasol component

What are the different types of antiviral drugs?

Acyclovir, Zirgan, and Viroptic

How do you dose acyclovir?
|
Apply a 1-cm ribbon of ointment to the inferior fornix 5 times a day for 10 days or at least 3 days after healing is complete

What is the dosage of Zirgan?
|
1 gtt in the affected eye 5 times a day until the corneal ulcer heals then TID for 7 days
|

What is the dosage of Viroptic?
|
1 gtt in the affected eye q2h until the corneal ulcer has completely re-epithelialized. Afterwards 5 times a day for 7 days

What should you avoid with Viroptic?
|
Treatment that exceeds 21 days
|

What are the uses for antivirals?
|
Tx of acute epithelial HSK. Also used for prophylaxis when topical corticosteroids are used in a pt with HSK
