Generalized seizures?

Tonic clonic (grand mal), atonic, myoclonic, status epilepticus, febrile, absence (petit mal)

Status epilepticus?

Series of rapid convulsive seizures with absence of respiration may cause irreversible brain damage

IV Valium (diazepam)


Phenobarbital

Luminal, barbiturate, toxicity (respiratory depression, ataxia, coma, hypotension)

Phenytoin

Dilantin, hydantoins, avoid alcohol & other CNS depressants, gingival hyperplasia, skin rash, IV give slowly and dilute it, hirsutism, interferes with vit. D metabolism

Diazepam

Valium, benzodiazepine, drug of choice for status epilepticus, respiratory depression, teratogenic, unable to form new memories (anterograde amnesia)

Lorazepam

Ativan, benzodiazepine, respiratory depression, teratogenic, anterograde amnesia

Carbamazepine

Tegretol, misc., nystagmus, sedation, blood dyscrasias

Valproic acid

Depakote, misc., GI effects (take with food), hepatotoxicity, avoid <3yrs, pancreatitis, thrombocytopenia

Gabapentin

Neurontin, misc., CNS effects
