Glycopeptides/polypeptides: Common Examples
Glycopeptides: Vancomycin, Colistin, Daptomycin
Polypeptides: Bacitracin |
Mechanism of Action
Glycopeptides: Interfere with formation of bridges between peptidoglycan chains. Works a step before beta-lactams
Bacitracin: Prevents transport of peptidoglycan precursors across membrane. Used topically only. |
Typical Use
- Excellent gram positive coverage (staph and strep)
- Used for MRSA and other beta lactam resistant gram positives - Inferior to oxacillin against MRSA |
Side Effects
- hypersensitivity
- must be given slowly. Can produce Red Man Syndrome: rash on face, neck, trunk |
Resistance Mechanisms
- Alteration of the terminus of the pentapeptide side chains on peptidoglycan, alters drug binding site
