What are cephlasporins?
Beta-lactams derivied from fungus cephlasporin.
What are carbapenams?
Beta-lactams that are broad spectrum from Gram -ve, penetrate CSF and are very expensive
What are glycopeptides?
Beta-lactams that are narrow spectrum for Gram +ve eg Vancomycin
What are aminoglycosides?
Bacteriocidal inhibitors of protein synthesis via binding the 30S of ribosomes.
Gram -ve
What are tetracyclines?
Bacterialstatic inhibitors of protein synthesis via binding 30S of ribosomes
What are Macrolides?
Bacteriostatic inhibitors of proteins synthesis via binding 50S of ribosomes eg Erythromycin
What are Quinolenes?
Inhibit DNA synthesis via DNA gyrase or Topoisomerase. Eg Moxifloxalin, Ciprofloxalin
What are Sulfonamides/Trimethoprim?
Inhibite folate metabolite synthesis
Treatment of Typical Pneumonia?
Amoxycillin (beta lactams) or Erythromycin (macrolide) or newer Quinolones
Treatment of Atypical Pneumonia? Eg mycoplasma, chlamydia?
Macrolides, Tetracylines, Quinolones
Treatment of Staph a Pneumonia?
Amoxycillin base and or Erythromycin plus Flucloxicilin (lactamase resistant)
Treatment of Legonella Pneumonia?
Amoxycillin 500mg (beta lactams) or Erythromycin 1g - higher dose(macrolide) for 3 weeks
Treatment of Anaerobe Pneumonia?
Penicillin
