Antibiotics
Substances made by microorganisms that inhibit the growth or kill other bacteria
General Information about viruses include these five:
1. Most are synthetic
2. May be broad spectrum
3.May be specific for 1 or 2 bacteria
4. Cause Side effects
5. Do not stop viruses because replication speed is too fast
Antibiotics target:
1. 70s ribosomes (stop translation) tetracycline
2. Cell wall (penicillin)
3. DNA replication in the cytoplasm (rifampicin)
4. Metabolic pathways (sulfa drugs)
Antibiotic resistant bacteria result from:
1. Mutation on bacterial chromosome
2. Acquisition of a resistance gene on plasmid
3. Resistance genes on mobile genetic elements
a. transposons insert selves into the chromosome or a plasmid
b. transfers to the daughter cells during replication
Survival of the fittest
1. Mutations happen rarely
2. 1/10 million mutation rate
3. After a normal course of antibiotics
a. the majority of bacteria are gone
b. few bacteria left are resistant bacteria
4. After incomplete course of antibioitics
a. Most suriving bacteria are resistant
b. Normal flora do not outnumber resistant bacteria
