Bellow 40 - DBP best
50-59 - DBP-SBP-PP (shift towards SBP) 60 - PP best |

What drugs can be used to treat hypertension:
|
ACE inhibitors
Beta-blockers Calcium-channel blockers Diuretics Angiotensin 2 antagonists. Alpha- blockers Vasodilators Central sympathophlegics |
|
Give an example of a diuretic used to treat hypertension
How does it work SE Eg |
Thiazide Diuretic - eg Hydrochlorthiazide
Inhibitions of NaCl reabsorption in early distal tubule of nephron. SE - fatigue hypokalaemia dyslipidaemia hyperuricaemia |
|
Explain the use of a beta-blocker for hypertension treatment?
Name a selective beta1 antagonist Can also be used to treat SE Name a selelctive beta 1 with b2 agonist acitivity |
They decrease HR and CO.
b1 selective - atenolol with vasodilatory and b1 - pindolol Treats- angina, MI, heat failure, anxiety SE - bronchospasm, worsening of peripheral vascular disease, glucose intolerance, dyslipidaemia. |

Describe how calicum channel blockers are used:
two types: |
Act on L-type voltage calicum channels. decreasing intraceullar calicium, decreasing the streth of excitation-contraction coupling in smooth muscle and cardiac cells.
dihydropyridines - nifedipine (vasculature) non dihydropyridine - diltiazem (heart) Blockage of L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, by dihydropyridines causes a reduction in calicum and vasodilation. Useful for hypertension, angina, raynauds Blockage of L-type receptors in the pacemaker cells, by diltizem, stabalises action potentials. Therefore useful in supraventricular arrhythmias. Side effects headache flushing ankle oedema, tachcycardia. Bradycardia |
