Benzodiazepines similarly as barbiturates. ( binding to GABA) but also increase the number if chloride channels.
Tranquilizers - chlordiazepoxide (Librium) diazepam (Valium ) alprazolam (Xanax ) lorazepam ( Ativan)

Hypnotics to overcome insomnia - flurazepam, triazolam.

Anti convulsants - diazepam & clonazepam.

Pre op sedative for children - midazolam ( versed)
Barbiturates - act by binding to GABA receptors and enhances the transmission of chloride ions. Thereby inhibiting the depolarization of neurons.
Ultra short acting - thiopental, methohexital.- for induction of gen anesthesia.

Short acting - pentobarbital, secobarbital - treating insomnia.

Intermediate acting - amobarbital, butabarbital - treating insomnia.

Long acting - phenobarbital, mephobarbital, primidone - treating certain type of seizures.
Flumazenil
Benzodiazepine antagonist, used to reverse the residual effects of benzodiazepine in the event of an overdose.
Anti insomnia agents (GABA-BZ agonists)
Zolpidem (ambien), eszopiclone (lunesta), zaleplon (sonata)
Buspirone (Bu Spar)
Anti anxiety agent. (no anti convulsant, or skeletal muscle relaxant properties)
Partial agonist at serotonin receptor.
