What is Social Science?


- The study of people as individuals and as members of aroups such as families and communities


Also known as the behaviour sciences (the study of human behaviour)

-The study of Human Beings as a species and as members of different cultures.

What is Stigma?

- a mark/sign of disgrace or discredit


-a visible sign/characteristic of a disease


-an attribute that is deeply disturbing

Stereotype

-Judgments made on the basis of exaggerated or distorted characteristics about groups of people.


-Applied to individuals associated with that group

Prejudice

-A preconcieved idea/opinion based on inadequate knowledge (either positive or negative judgements)



Discriminination

-Unfavourable treatment based on prejudice

Mood Disorders

A frequent change in mood caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain

Major Depressive Disorder symptoms

- Loss of enjoyment in life


- Irritable


-Sadness


-Either too much or too little sleep


-Decrease/Increase in appetite


- Sense of worthlessness, guilt and suicidal thoughts.

BPD symptoms

- Cycle of depressed mood, "normal" mood, and mania (elevated, exaggerated mood),


-Manic Symptoms: Inflayed self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, increased energy, poor judgement, increased spending, agitation, non stop talking.

Psychosis

-Experiencing hallucinations/delusions that are either drug-induced or mental illness.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

- Delusions, disorganized speech, catatonic behaviour. (Delusions are a false belief or misenterpretation of situations).


-Hallucinations can be any of the five senses, but auditory is the most common


-Difficulty with daily life

Anxiety Disorders

- Feelings of anxiousness combined with physiological symptoms that interfere with everyday activites

OCD (Obsessive Compulsory Disorder)

- Symptoms of obsessions- disturbing, intrusive thoughts, ideas, or images that cause distress


-Compulsions- Repeated behaviours or mental acts to reduce anxiety

PTSD

-Re-experiencing of traumatic events accompanied by feelings of extreme anxiety and wanting to avoid anything associated with the trauma (Miltiary, abuse, etc..)

Dissociative Identity Disorder


(multiple personality disroder)

- 2 or more identities that control someones personality


- Failure to make connections between identity, memory and consciousness

Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa: Intense irrational fear of body fat/weight gain, desire to become thinner, distorted body image.




Bulimia Nervosa: Binge eating (lots of food in a short period of time, making the person feel anxious about weight gain) and purging after eating (vomiting, exercise, etc..)

Mental Health

- A disturbance in thoguhts and emotions that decreases a person's ability to cope w reality and everyday life
