Mehinaku seclusion rituals:
*Physical growth and maturation require human intervention (bodies are 'made')
*Occasions that call for seclusion: birth, boys ear piercing, puberty, mourning, becoming a shamanavoid extreme emotion and work hardfood taboos, medicines, body scrapings, simple dress.
Division of labor (economic and childrearing roles):
The major division of labor is by sex. A husband and wife are an economic team who have the skill to produce virtually all of the necessities of life. The husband provides the fish, but no meal is complete without manioc bread, which the wife supplies
Male vs. female “spaces”
Male space=center of the village, social space, highly visible.
Female Space= Outer limits of village, private, less formal space
Gender in ritual life
sacred flutes-the threat of sexual violence (women cant see or touch flutes)
Contradicts peaceful ideology of mehinaku
The couvade and male menstruation
Gender roles are culturally made, not biologically given. They can perform each other’s roles. This is a sympathetic pregnancy which includes male menstruation, ritual cross dressing
Myth about the origin of contemporary gender roles
Women decide they can live without men after they turn into animal spirits.

Women and men's roles are but necessary for survival, they are co-dependent on them.
