Patrilineal descent
relationships or familial descent defined by father-child lineage, where the men and women belongs to the patrilineage (Lavenda and Schultz)
Cross-Cousins
brother-sister pair. Ex: a boy’s mother’s brother’s children, or a boy’s father’s sister’s children. Not identified as cousins by name (depending on matrilineage or patrilineage), but are cousins by blood.(L&S 165)
-For the Yanomamo, there is less violence between married cross-cousins, because is expected that you love your family (while this is not the case for your spouse)
Matrilineal descent

The partners in a marriage live with the husband’s father.
EX: Yanomamo women live with man’s part of the family(L&S 170)

Uterine Family
Unit based around the mother. In China, the Uterine family is more important to the woman than the patrilineage. In this case, the father is not considered to be quite a member, and may even be the enemy (Uterine Family 33)
Metakinesis
New believers learn to identify bodily and emotional states as signs of God’s presence in their life, and take real form. a great transgression from the original verbal and cognitive way of experiencing god. This has become common among new converts who are looking for a real and close connection with god. (Metakinesis 519)
Rituals
Certain repetitive social practices. Power is given to the ritual by the assertion that something or someone (for example, a higher being) authorized the ritual. Can be religious, but often has little religious affiliation (L&S 74-5)
Rite of Passage
a specific type of ritual where one plus member of a community pass from one social group to another (often initiations into adulthoo). For the yanomamo, a woman’s first menstration is a rite of passage, and she has to follow very specific rules…..birth, death, marriage…(L&S 75)
Syncretism
Synthesis of old religious practices and new ones from outside sources (such as colonizers). For example, the Trobrianders adopted Christianity without completely changing their lifestyle, because it was seen as a more powerful form of magic (L&S 81)
Witchcraft
intertwined with religion and science. For the trobianders, death is often an indication of witchcraft. For the Azande, if something unusual, such as a talented potter breaking a pot, it is believed to be due to witchcraft. For the Azande, witchcraft is considered to be a solid and real thing (using an object) (Lavenda and Schultz 78)
Swidden Agriculture
is the method of slash and burn, so that the ground can receive new nutrients from the ashes. This is used by the trobrianders and the Hmong????? The Hmong had difficulting transitioning to a new type of agriculture, b/c they were used to swidden (Lavenda and Schultz 134)
Social Capital
Resources that are derived from the participation in mutually supportive relationships in homogenous groups and between larger heterogenous groups…(Letting them Die 191)
Symbolic Capital
Held by those who are considered the authorities on a matter, who everyone will listen to and value their opinion. In grassroots communities such as the South African Mining communities, men have more sympbolic capital than women. Among Hmong refugees in the US, Americans and doctors have less symbolic capital (Letting them DIe 190)
Refugee vs Immigrant
A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave (often hastily) from their country usually from war or violence of some sort, and be relocated in another country with minimal preparation and without the training and process that Immigrants undergo. The Hmong are refugees in America, forced to leave b/c of earlier Vietnam, and later civil fighing,,,,
Critical Consciousness
Understanding of the ways in which social conditions have put them in a situation where their health is compromised and undermined (Sex workers…)

Self definition as a result to one’s relationship to different social groups or from one’s position in power dynamics such as gender, socioeconomic or ethnicity. Can have multiple social identities…(460)

The thought that things such as roads, water, telecommunications and such allow for a country to participate in the international economy (The Moneylenders)
World Bank
Was created to provide long term loans, originally for war-torn countries post WW2, and later changed its focus to fixing other countries that “needed” help-3rd world countries. In many countries (such as Bolivia), the giving was unsuccessful, b/c it was given to governments that didn’t represent the people, so the y saw very little of the money, but were the ones that had to pay it off (Money lenders)
